Will RDH see the New Year?

It was reported today at 7:30am by Aiden Sullivan that work had begun on demolishing Ward 4 which was used for alcoholics but changed to a mixed rehab ward for some of the better, more independent patients 20 – 50 year old. Usually locked after 7pm
It appears that the developer is knocking down 1 ward a month at the current rate. With only approx 6 Wards plus the chapel left at this rate there maybe some hope that part of the former RDH will be still standing in 2011.
Ward 4 demolition pics uploaded shortly.

I think that it was a sad day when you were no longer able to drive around Willow Court and Royal Derwent sites because of the fools that choose to destroy others property. I remember taking former residents of the site up there as they wanted to tell me stories about when they lived on the site on numerous of the wards. It was hard for them to understand why they could not get to the places that they used to call home.
We have a choice to live where we wish. We need to remember that to many willow court was home, and it was a very sad day when they were moved on. I know of many clients that would go back to living at Willow Court tommorrow if they had a choice. They had freedom to access their community as they wished and treated as a member of a community.
It is an even sadder day when the site will have no recollection of the history good or bad.

  • Hi Claire

Likewise I work in the industry and agree with pretty much eveything you said. It is sad that you can no longer freely access the Wards because of a few idiots.
A lot people only see the bad side of WCC & RDH but there were postives and like you said many ppl called it home and didn’t want to leave. RDH & WCC had everything the patients ever needed in one central location, for some they grew up there as a baby, and the staff and other patients were like family so its only natural that some patients didn’t want to leave there home and family.
Did the clients tell you any interesting stories that you could share? if so please contact me.

    Thanks

    Nick
