This is a collection of stories that I have heard over the years or that APIU have experienced during Paranormal Investigations.

Royal Derwent Hospital

 

 

Pit Wards

One story I heard involved a group of men who had wandered in during the night. One man unfortunately fell into one of the pits. Unable to get him out, his friend went back to their home to get some rope. When they returned, their mate was paralysed with fear after “seeing” things.

 

 

 

WARD 5

The Mercury Newspaper 7/8/91 about a Male Hating Ghost inside Ward 5. The Article states that the ghost appears as a blue tinge on a white wall like a heat haze. It was reported that male staff in the ward were thrown against walls by the ghost. The Tasmania Catholic Church stated that they would perform a type of exorcism if they felt it was a serious matter”.

APIU  have been in Ward 5 many times and whilst we haven’t captured the ghost of Ward 5 we have had something  respond to our questions via tapping.

Ward 5 is supposed to be haunted by a ghost called Winston. We do not know where this name came from whether its what the ghost called himself or something the staff used to call him. I have spoken with some staff and they truly believe it was haunted and even said some of the old patients thought so.

M.S (2010) stated “we saw what looked like a head in the window of Ward 5. It moved from being in view, to the left, and then would repeat that. We walked further up, and this head-like figure had moved to a lower part of the window, as we were no longer seeable from the initial window. It was very strange, and was gone when we came back”

 

Aiden Sullivan (2010) 

Aiden went for a jog around RDH and to suss out the damage that occurred to Ward 9 after this week’s fire.

Below is Aiden’s account.

“I was walking through ward 5 to gain access to the Royal Derwent hospital site, as I exited the ward I hear a massive male yell. It was 7.00 in New Norfolk so no one was around and the voice came from inside the ward. So I checked out all thee ward. No one was in there. I couldn’t make out what it said.”

Keep in mind Aiden has been investigating the paranormal for a number of years, and had been inside Ward 5 dozens of times with no reports of paranormal activity apart from a few sketchy tapping noises. Aiden uses a scientific model for Paranormal Investigation which includes ruling out environmental factors, I do not believe Aiden would name this report as Paranormal if he exhausted all other possibly explanations.

 

 

Ward 7

Ward & has a very sinister feeling. People that live nearby claim that they hear a scream coming from Ward 7 or a ward very close by 12am every night. APIU have heard what sounded like a very menacing laugh in the left wing of Ward 7. We have also heard a whistling noise which carried a tune.

The Cave Clan wrote about possibly Ward 7 or 10 “Outside another ward, one surrounded by a 3meter wall dug into the yard, a bit like a zoo, we spotted a figure through the window on the other side of the building, where we had just driven, and not seen anyone. we walked around that side of the building and n-oone was there. soon after, we heard a baby laugh and then the sound of children playing, again, nowhere near houses or any kids, certainly not near enough for sound to carry that far….”

Ward 11

This is quite a strange ward, I get the feeling there is something in this ward which likes o play tracks on us, and I’m uncertain whether they are friend or not. Once when standing the middle section of the Ward Aiden was kneeling down to look at something on the floor. When he got up he noticed something running towards him which looked like a pair of legs, he tried to get up and was disorientated.

Ward 9

M.S (2010) stated “ we went there after seeing your video on YouTube. I waiting outside with my friend, and my mum’s friend went inside. A few minutes later she ran out screaming, and we laughed at her. Then she stopped and told us to look at the door, and there was a black figure standing there. Only mum’s friend saw it at a different door, to what me and my friend saw it as. So we brought mum up, and she went in with her friend while I waited outside with my friend. This is where it got really weird. They had been in there for at least half an hour and we started yelling their names. We saw the tourch go past the door they came through and then turn around and go back. When they finally came out, they said it felt like they’d only been in there for 5 minutes. But the door they came through had been locked behind them and they couldn’t get out, mum said that the whole time she felt someone breathing down her neck, and while she was in there the room had sort of changed, and there were basins linned around all the doors.

Ward 2

Ex-staff of Ward 2 have stated that Turning left at the end of (R) Wing of Ward 2, 2nd room on the right…. is one room many staff did not want to be in or near at night or early hours of the morning. Cold breezes passing through you, visuals of a ghostly female being, more scared than scary, and the taps on your shoulder or back with no one else there in that position to do it.

Ward 3

M.S stated “The a big room that’s green when you go inside. When I went in there the head ache started and became unbearable. I also felt like I was about to have a panic attack and my Mum ran out holding her mouth because she was vomitting. When we were in there my sister said “We’re not meant to be in here, we have to get out.” and when we were out she said there is a young girl in there by the name of Claire and her last name starts with something that sounds like ‘Au’. Both M.S and her mum stated that she heard whispering in this Ward.

Ward 1 & 12

We have only been inside these wards a handful of times, but we feel they have potential. We have heard some very bizarre noises in these Wards each time we investigate. In both Wards we have heard what appears to be footsteps, or something creaking the floor close by.

 

 

 

 

 

RDH Staff Houses

Mathew Tennant worked at the Royal Derwent/Willow Court as a cleaner from 1994 until the closure and also lived in a staff house at 2 Lower Rd for 4 years in which time myself and two of my mates experienced 3 separate paranormal events also some strange happenings in the house.

 

 Account 1

Mathew said that night the house felt weird like something was there. Mathew said they were watching TV about 9pm when his friend that was on the couch suddenly jumped up and ran across the room, shaking. Mathew said that his flat mate stated that he heard something whisper in his ear but couldn’t make out what it was.

 

 Account 2

Mathew stated he was sleeping on the couch at about 2am, Matthew said he woke normally, then all of a sudden he heard a voice say “Watch him”. Mathew stated that it sounded as if the ghost was speaking to another ghost at the time.

 

Account 3

Mathew said about 12 months after the other incidents he was asleep in bed one night and woke up paralysed. Mathew said he couldn’t move a muscle. Mathew stated that shouted out “get the Fuck off” and all of a sudden he was able to move.

 

Misc

Mathew said he used to keep a room locked in the house because it was full of expensive music equipment. Mathew said on occasions he would go in there and found the door unlocked, or cupboard door and drawers opened. Mathew said because of the equipment in this room he always made sure the door was locked and drawer’s shut.

Matthew lights used to turn on over night by themselves.

Mathew stated that a self proclaimed psychic came into the house after hearing Mathews experiences and stated that there was something inside the house.

 

 

Royal Derwent’s Nurses Home

Mathew stated one day himself and a colleague were cleaning the second and third floors of the Nurse home. Mathew stated he took the third floor whilst his Colleague the second floor.

Whilst working up there Mathew heard the lift come up and stop at his level. Mathew stated he heard the doors open and heard what sounded like someone pushing a cleaner’s trolley into the kitchen area. Mathew stated he sang out to his College to see if it was her. Mathew heard no response, he sang out a few more time until he hard

his college down stairs via the stairwell.

 Mathew heard reports of something on the Top Level of the Nurses Home. And he stated at night you would notice the elevator moving.
