Demolished Wards

Demolished  Wards

Some of this information is a little sketchy as I have been sifting through documents trying to piece together when these buildings were constructed and demolished. If anyone can confirm dates or any other info please let me know.
It’s a shame that we lost these absolutely beautiful buildings and its history; we can never let something like this ever happen again at Willow Court.
Most of these Wards were demolished during the major reform of the 1960’s

The Cunningham-Dax report- an outside opinion.

In the report presented to parliament in 1963 suggested:
  • Rear Court yard of the Barracks should be demolished immediately
  • K1 Ward tower be demolished and perhaps part of K2, nut further consideration should be given to this part of K2, as it could be economically restored for 20 patients.
  • I ward should be demolished as soon as the females security wards in the east hospital are built.
  • A Ward should be demolished when the wings of C ward are built.
  • B Ward should be demolished when sufficient accommodation exists to take the patients to other wards.

 DEMOLISHED Willow Court Wards

The Fallen Willow tree

I believe the famous Willow Tree was cut down in October 1963 (year is an approximate).
An article in the Mercury May 17th 1969 states the Tree was removed due to Rot.Mrs Anne Terry & Mrs J Craw tended a young willow grown from root stock of the orginal tree planted by Lady Franklin. Several of these will be grown in Willow Court.
R.W. Gowland- Troubled Asylum (1981, p.178) states It was a sad time in Willow Court late in October this year, when the axe fell on the famous old Willow Tree. It was recorded that historically minded citizens were on hand to strike a few cuttings for future generations.

K1 K2 and Clock Tower

In 1883 a Royal Commission recommended the construction of K1 K2 and the tower. It was constructed between 1887 and 1901 in two stages K1 and K2 due to lack of funding. It was demolished during the major reform of the 1960’s
R.W. Gowland- Troubled Asylum (1981, p.182&183) states that Southern Cartage and Excavations moved into do the demolition works. Truckloads of bricks and timber were given to anyone who wanted them. A large amount was dumped on the present site of the New Norfolk Caravan Park. The Clock tower proved hard to knock down requiring two blasts.
Former nurse Mrs Grace Curtain writes (1965) it housed approximately 130 patients and 8 staff.
The Solid Tower would have defied any attack from the Norman invasion, the size of the stone blocks giving rise to the same mental conjecture as the pyramids. Stairs were feet thick, the tread grooves with nearly a hundred years of use- the archways and vaulted ceilings must surely have been the dream of a medieval architect. Acoustics left nothing to be desired, the faintness stirring in the dead of night could be hard from any pint in the building.
Clock itself originally came from Port Arthur and was wound every Monday, it was never correct in time.
The old tower watched during the war years as trenches were dug in the hospital grounds where staff and patients were put the Air Raid Precautions.

how can people so senselessly destroy our history please leave something for those who follow us.

  • Well spoken Cheryl I couldn’t agree more.
We have already lost enough, lets fight to save whats left.

I couldn’t agree more! How about that stunning clock tower? The 60s have a lot to answer for (the same was done to many beautiful old buildings in Melbourne). Here’s hoping our generation of those in control aren’t similarly shortsighted! This site needs to be preserved and fast. What is going on?

  • Exactly, that’s what I will be fighting for. It may look unsightly too some in 2011 but in 20 years time we might be saying why didn’t we protect the Oval Wards.

  • avatar smartie_69:

I can’t say I know the site as well as you Nick but the art deco architecture that I have seen around the oval buildings is lovely. And even for those buildings which may not look as crash hot from The Avenue vista, they are worth keeping. Apart from preserving history and architecture, it’s also (I would have thought) to some extent a matter of financial logic. Surely it makes sense to redploy an existing (sound) building where feasible rather than demolish it. Which is what was done when the childcare centre was relocated to Ring Road. Though admittedly some buildings are less attractive (but that is so subjective).

  • 100% agreed.
To lose any of the buildings at this stage will only have a negative affect on the site as a whole.
Once Willow Court is up and running and making money, those Oval Wards will be an asset and I think people will be flocking to try and buy a slice of WCC, but that’s if oval wards are still for sale.

I live in New Norfolk and I look down onto what is left of Willow Court.
THE DERWENT VALLEY COUNCIL SHOULD BE RUN OUT OF OFFICE!!! THEY are the people responsible for the lack of care and concern in the preservation of our HISTORY. Having sold off most of it to some of the public for heaven knows how much money they now STILL drag the chain about making any decisions over what to do with the little that is left.
I am truly totally fed up and disgusted with our Council and Mayor, all they seem to do is say what they feel you want to hear.
I have been back here in Tas for 10 years now and I cannot believe the lack of pride in our Heritage. The headstones from St. David’s Park in the City were mostly removed to Cornelian Bay and they have now deteriorated and fallen over. It makes me so angry and sick and I don’t understand this mentality at all.
People, do not hold your breath that there will be something to be proud of in years to come with Willow Court, all that will happen is more and more will disappear right beneath us. OUR wonderful COUNCIL has already given it’s tick of approval to bulldoze a lovely old home just beside the Bush Inn car park in order to replace it with 2 units. This Council is so money hungry but never gives anything back. They wasted $125,000.00 on plants and very large concrete boxes that were placed in the middle of a street!!! After many complaints they removed them up to the local tip. Of course the road had to be resurfaced because it had been ruined. Believe me nothing positive will be afoot in this Town unfortunately, not until our entire Council is replaced or investigated by the State Government. The Town is a DISGRACE!!!

  • I totally understand your frustrations. However

An MoU has been signed between Local & State Govt regarding WCC and there is a new committee chaired by David Llewellyn and a panel of experts who have the responsibility now. They have the complete Macdonald Report and have already gained some funding, there really is no excuse for the site to further deteriorate without someone doing something about it. I think we have reached a point where we begin to see Willow Court slowly rise from the ashes (pardon the pun).

I think private investors is also the key to getting things moving in the town. Look at the Willow Court Village square, there is at least 7 business running out there and the Wards are getting some TLC, not to mention the events that occure there. Perhaps if they were not sold they would be destroyed or burnt.
